Vodafone Group Plc is a public limited company incorporated in England, headquartered in Newbury, Berkshire, England, UK.
It is the
world's leading mobile telecommunications company, with a significant
presence in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific and the
United States, where it owns 45% of Verizon Wireless, the largest
American mobile telecommunications company.
It is the second
largest mobile telecom group in the world behind China Mobile.
Vodafone was born in 1984 as a
subsidiary of Racal Electronics Plc, the third-largest British
electronics firm. Then known as Racal Telecom Limited, in October
1988 approximately 20% of the company's capital was offered to the
public. In September 1991 it became an independent company, at which
time it changed its name to Vodafone Group Plc.
At 31 December
2008, the Group had 289 million customers in 25 markets across 5
continents.
The core business of the Group is mobile, but now they are moving into integrated mobile and PC communication services. It is doing that in two ways - wirelessly through 3G and HSDPA (High-Speed Download Packet Access), but also using fixed line broadband services like DSL (Digital Subscriber Line).
The Company's ordinary shares are
listed on the London Stock Exchange and the Company's American
Depositary Shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The
Company had a total market capitalisation of approximately £74
billion at 31 December 2008.
