Siemens is a large European company from Germany. It was founded in 1847 by Werner von Siemens. Siemens invented the telegraph which made it possible to send messages to others.In 1848 they build the first long distance telegraph line in Europe. In 1850 the company of Werner von Siemens, then called Telegraphen-Bauanstalt von Siemens & Halske, was represented in London by his brother Sir William Siemens. The company was also involved in building a long distance telegraph network in Russia.
In 1867 the company was able to complete the Indo-European telegraph line, which connected from Calcutta till London.
Siemens was also involved in making electric street lightning possible. In 1881 they used a Siemens AC Alternator in combination with a watermill to power these street lightnings. The company kept growing and in 1907 Siemens had 34.324 employees and was the second-largest company in Germany.
During the 20's and 30's Siemens started to manufacture radios, television sets and electron microscopes. Later in the 50's they started to manufacture computers, semiconductor devices, washing machines and pacemakers.
Since 2008 the company is divided into 3 sectors and in 15 divisions.

Nowadays Siemens has offices in more then 190 countries and has about 475.000 employees. Their headoffices are in Germany, in Berlin and Munich.
