It was founded in 1905 by two English business men, Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law Alfred Davis, who founded "Wilsdorf and Davis" in London.
The main business of this at the time was importing Hermann Aegler's Swiss movements to England and placing them in quality cases. These early wristwatches were sold to jewellers, who then put their own names on the dial.
In 1908 they registered the trademark "Rolex" and opened an office in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland and finally in 1919 they moved the company to Geneva, Switzerland where it was established as the Rolex Watch Company. They decided so, because there expenses to trade gold and silver were lower than in Britain.
The company is still owned by a private trust, and shares are not traded on any stock exchange.
A part of the luxury and the status of the brand, we also remember the company because of some important innovations in clock's world: the first waterproof watch case, the first wristwatch with a date on the dial; the first watch to show two time zones at once; and the first watchmakers to earn chronometer certification for a wristwatch.
Its brands include Explorer II, Day-Date, Yacht-Master, GMT-Master II, Cosmograph Daytona, Submariner, and others. Its gold, bronze, and stainless steel watches are available with diamonds or other precious stones.
It is headquarted in Geneva, Switzerland.
It has 28 affiliates worldwide and relying 4.000 watchmakers in over 100 countries.
The company named finance director Bruno Meier CEO in late 2008.
