KLM is the Royal Dutch Airlines and is the national airline of the Netherlands.

KLM was founded in 1919 and is with this the oldest carrier which is still operating under its original name. From the start KLM carried both passengers and freight.

KLM has over 90 destinations and operates domestic and worldwide passenger and cargo services.
In 1921 KLM decided to start with scheduled services and in 5 years they had flights to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Brussels, Paris, London, Bremen, Copenhagen and Malmo.
In 1929 KLM started with intercontinental service to the Netherlands East Indies (Republic of Indonesia).
The first transatlantic route was between Amsterdam and Curacao in 1934. In 1946 KLM launched a scheduled service to New York

Since 2004 KLM is part of Air France-KLM, but still has its own headquarters in Amstelveen (The Netherlands). The Air France-KLM business is part of the SkyTeam alliance with Delta Air Lines, Aeromexico, Korean Air, Czech Airlines, Alitalia, Northewest Airlines, Aeroflot, China Southern Airline and Continental airlines.
In 2007 KLM had 30.118 employees and has carried about 23.4 million passengers.

Big accident
The biggest accident which involved a KLM airplane and a Pan Am happened on March 27, 1977 on Tenerife. Both airplanes were originally not planned to have a stop there, but because of a bombing on the airport of Las Palmas they were diverted to Tenerife. Due to bad weather and not correct radio communication an awful accident happened. The KLM and Pan Am both ended up on the same runway but in opposite position. The KLM flight was ready for take of and the Pan Am was going to clear the runway when found the right exit. When the two captains saw eachother airplanelights they did everything to avoid a collision. Unfortunately they collised and everyone on the KLM flight died and almost everyone of the Pan Am flight.

What really happend and who to blame still remains unknown, though KLM took 70% of the guild.
