DreamWorks SKG
06-01-09

The company started the 12th of October in 1994, when it was established by Steven Spielberg, David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg in Universal City, California, USA.

They established DreamWorks SKG to come with a new big film company in Hollywood, but in 2005 they agreed with selling the company to Viacom. They decided so, cause they had a lot of debts and couldn't pay any more. One of the reasons people give for this, is the movie The Island. This movie wasn't a success and cost almost more then it rewarded.

DreamWorks' animation arm was spun-off in 2004 into DreamWorks Animation SKG. Its films were distributed worldwide by Paramount, but the animation studio remained independent of Paramount/Viacom.

The first movie this company produced was the animation movie Antz. Some other famous movies that DreamWorks has produced are Shrek and the rest of the sequel, Madagascar, Sharktale, Over the Hedge and Kung Fu Panda.

While making its movies DreamWorks worked together with other companies sometimes. These companies were:
- Universal Studios
- Sony Pictures Entertainment
- Paramount Pictures
- Warner Bros Pictures
- 20th Century Fox

The company produced together with these companies many of the most famous movies we have ever seen since the beginning of its activity, such as: Saving Private Ryan (1998), Small Soldiers (1998), American Beauty (1999), Almost Famous (2000), Cast Away (2000), Gladiator (2000), Meet the Parents (2000), A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001), A Beautiful Mind (2001), Catch Me If You Can (2002), Minority Report (2002), The Ring (2002), The Terminal (2004), and I love You Man, presented now in the movie theatres.

On February 9, 2009, DreamWorks entered a 6-year, 30-picture distribution deal with The Walt Disney Company starting in 2010, after breaking off negotiations with Universal Pictures just days earlier. Paramount will continue to distribute the animated films to avoid a conflict of interest, as Disney is itself a major player in animation. Ironically, DreamWorks had been founded after Katzenberg had a falling out with Disney, in 1994.

In 2008 revenues were $4.5 billion, employees 120.

Present CEO of DreamWorks Animation is Jeffrey Katzenberg.
