Aristotle Onassis
06-02-09

Aristotle Onassis was born 15 January 1906 in Karatass, a suburb of Smyrna, in the old Ottoman Empire, that now is İzmir, in Turkey.

Its father, Socrates Onassis, was a shipowner and had a fleet of 10 ships with 40 sailors. It was him to pass the passion to Aristotle.

In 1923 Aristotle Onassis decided to leave his home country for Buenos Aires, Argentina and he had the idea of importing tobacco from Turkey. He also started there to build his fleet. His first purchase was six ships from a Canadian shipping company during the Great Depression at scrap metal prices. During these ships' first commercial voyage, Ari had to come up with the idea of changing the flag of a ship to a convenience flag. His power and influence increased rapidly; he frequently attended important social events, and in 1925 he received both Argentine and Greek citizenship.

In 1957 he founded Olympic Airways, today Olympic Airlines.

He also made large profits when the big petroleum companies like Mobil, Socony, and Texaco signed long-term contracts at fixed prices with him for the use of his fleet, while having trouble managing their own fleet which operated under US flags and thus at high cost.

Reached a big success, he started to do business with colonel George Papadopoulos, which they referred to as the "greatest business" in Greece. This project involved building an oil refinery, shipyards, power plants, and several aluminium facilities. The project was officially named the Omega Project.

He always had a beautiful woman on his arms. If it weren't his wife, Tina (whom he strategically married to enter the shipping elite), it was Maria Callas and later even the former wife of John F Kennedy, Jackie Kennedy.

Onassis died of bronchial pneumonia at age 69, on March 15, 1975 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France and he was buried on the family island Skorpios near Greece.
